morad rafael,

Thanks for your question.

Lipitor (generic - atorvastatin) is a cholesterol lowering medication that lowers total cholesterol, LDL, and raises good cholesterol known as HDL.  This is not a layered medication and it is "timed release".

There is no problem in breaking the pill to accommodate your prescribed dosing.

I hope this has been helpful.

Dr. Cane, this is a serious question. My cardiologist told me just yesterday, and I quote him; "Niaspan is the only drug that can raise good HDL". If this is not true I've been ill advised. Maybe I should start looking for another cardiologist.

Also Dr. Cane. I'm told that some people can do little (to nothing) to increase their HDL due to genetics within their family. Is this true? If so, should I still take Niaspan? My HDL has never gone over 40....ever. It normally runs between 32-37. Exercise does not seem to help at all. I know nothing about HDL levels in my parents, sisters, etc. They are all gone now.
