Q: My total cholesterol is high but my HDL is very high. Should I consider lowering my LDL?

My LDL is 151 and my HDL is 99.  The ratio is excellent at 2.67. My triclycerides are 72.  Should I be concerned with lowering my LDL even though I have a high HDL?

Hi Yvonne,

Yes, I recommend you take steps to lower LDL below 130 mg/dl.  You're right, your ratio, triglycerides, and HDL are great.  However, excess LDL is at risk for oxidation.  This is the process that leads to plaque formation in your arteries.  It's best to lower LDL to the healthy range.  One way to promote lower LDL is by increasing soluble fiber intake.

All the best,
