Q: What is the equivalent amount of Simvastatin to replace 10mg of Lipitor?

I have been taking 10mg of Lipitor for 3  years; however, my new insurance company wants me to take Simvastatin.  What would be the equvilent dosage of Simvastatin?

Hi Rocket,

I recommended discussing how to substitute simvastatin for Lipitor with your pharmacist and/or physician.

Thank you for responding.  I asked my pharmacist and she said talk to to my doctor.  My doctor wrote a prescription in the amount of 40mg of simvastatin to replace only 10mg of Lipitor.  That seems high to me, especially since my husband is only taking 20 mg of simvastatin.

Both simvastatin and atorvastatin (Lipitor) act by reducing the body's production of cholesterol.  I'm not able to tell you why your dose for one needs to be greater than the other.  If you have questions about the prescription there is nothing wrong with consulting another physician to ensure your treatment plan is appropriate.
