If a pound is about 3500 calories, then i think she would need to lose that many calories per day through diet and exercise.  If her metabolic rate is 1500 calories a day, then she would have to eat only about 500 calories and burn another 2500 through exercise every day.  This would be very difficult I think.  Don't forget we lose about 4 pounds of water per hour of running, so that may trick people into thinking they're losing real weight.    If you lose only 500 calories a day beyond your metabolic rate, then I believe you would only lose a pound a week (500 X 7=3500). This a probably safer.
