my total cholesterol is 232.  hdl 49, trg 170, ldl 149.  i have refused statins, and have tried diet. I do smoke, but so does my husband. his cholesterol is fine. Could it be because he takes niacin for RA and just so happens his chol. is lowered because of it? Can i take niacin without a dr. knowing about it?

Hi Cathy,

Niacin supplements are an over-the-counter medication and can be purchased without a prescription; however, it's best to keep your physician informed of all supplements you decide to take.

thank you so much. this was helpful. i have also put a note into my dr. to ask her how much, when. she has already told me it was ok to take.  In your opinion, is it safer to take niacin than a RX statin?

Hi Cathy,

Glad you discussed niacin with your physician.  Statin meds versus niacin - They serve different functions as far as lowering cholesterol levels or raising HDL levels.  Potential negative side effects are much greater with statin meds.  However, work with your physician to determine the best treatment approach for you.

This video animation shows how cholesterol behaves in the blood stream. Cholesterol is a soft, fat-like, waxy substance found in the bloodstream and in all your body's cells.
