if i am not taking large doses of niacin, should i notify my doctor?

my total cholesterol is 232.  hdl 49, trg 170, ldl 149.  i have refused statins, and have tried diet. I do smoke, but so does my husband. his cholesterol is fine. Could it be because he takes niacin for RA and just so happens his chol. is lowered because of it? Can i take niacin without a…
