Q: I had a lipid panel done and the results are chol 212H, Trig 209H, HDL 42L, LDL 128.0, Chol/HDL 5.0. Should I consider medication?

Hi Alice,

 

Here are the recommendations of the American Heart Association:


Total cholesterol less than 200
HDL cholesterol at least > 40, ideally > 60
LDL cholesterol at least less than 130, ideally less than 100
Triglycerides less than 150

I recommend making diet and lifestyle changes to control your levels versus becoming dependent on medication. Work with your physician to determine what is appropriate for your treatment plan.
