Q: Can cholesterol lowering drugs cause unwanted weight loss?

Can cholesterol lowering drugs cause weight loss?  I am a 63 year old female, 5' 6"" and did not want to lose weight but with no change in diet dropped from about 125 to 114 in the past six months, first using red yeast rice (which lowered my cholesterol but caused stomach irritation) for about 3 months and now Crestor for about 3 months.  I seem unable to gain the wieght back.

Hi Catherine,

Weight loss would not be a typical side effect of Crestor. However, that doesn't mean there's not a connection. I recommend discussing with your doctor. Your pharmacist would be another good resource to discuss medication side effects.
