Most foods in the U.S. contain some trace of chemicals, pesticides, antibiotics and genetically-modified substances. By eating organic, you can lower your risk of exposure to chemicals. It may be more expensive, but the following fruits and vegetables are worth buying. While organic alternatives may not be available all the time, it’s important to be aware and make substitutions when you can.

An apple a day may keep the doctor away but it’s still filled with chemicals. According to the Environmental Working Group, apples have the worst pesticides levels. Before you take your first bite of a non-organic apple, thoroughly wash the skin. Peeling the skin strips away most of the nutritional benefits.

Rich in Vitamins C and potassium celery is one of the healthiest vegetables but ranks among the top of the “dirty” produce list. A piece of celery had 14 types of pesticides on it. Vegetables with edible exteriors like celery are prone to contamination.
