Discovery could make statins work even better

New research has found that though cholesterol-lowering statins work to lower bad cholesterol, the drugs also raise levels of a protein that may keep them from working as well as they could. Scientists working with mice found statins boost levels of PCSK9, a protein that can affect bad cholesterol levels in the blood. Researchers say that adding a component to statins that helps inhibit PCSK9 may help the drugs lower bad cholesterol more efficiently. Read more »
