A gene that's already associated with helping people live longer may also be linked to a pathway that clears cholesterol from the body. Researchers at MIT say the gene, called SIRT1, activates a cellular pathway that flushes cholesterol from the body by using good cholesterol. The scientists say their finding could lead to the creation of meds that treat cholesterol-related diseases such as atherosclerosis and Alzheimer's disease.
