An omega-3 fatty acid drug designed to reduce triglyceride levels has passed another stage of its clinical trials. In the recent study, Omacor (omega-3-acid ethyl esters) was added to patients' existing Zocor (simvastatin) treatment to see how the statin would work when the drugs were taken in combination. The results showed that Zocor worked just as well with the triglyceride-lowering fatty acid as it did alone. Omacor is the only omega-3 fatty acid approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
