A new German study has found that even at high doses, policosanol is no more effective at lowering cholesterol than a placebo. Previous studies had supported policosanol's health benefits, but those studies were all done by a single Cuban research group. Policosanol, which is made from Cuban sugar cane, is sold worldwide as an antioxidant, a cholesterol-lowering supplement, and as an anti-clotting agent.
