U.S. researchers find why grapefruit juice and some drugs don't mix

Researchers in the United States have isolated the compound furanocoumarin in grapefruit juice as the cause of the juice's effect on the absorption of some drugs, including statins. Furanocoumarin stops an enzyme in the intestines from breaking down drugs. This causes the body to absorb too much of the medications and sometimes results in adverse effects. Read more »
