Inflammatory arthritis gene boosts heart risk

A gene that boosts people's risk of developing inflammatory forms of arthritis may also increase their risk of dying prematurely from cardiovascular disease, researchers say. Scientists have long known that people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have shorter life spans, often due to cardiovascular disease. Now researchers have isolated a gene--HRA-DRB1--that may be behind both the increased RA and cardiovascular disease risks, a discovery that could lead to new, more targeted treatments. Read more »
