European drugmaker NicOx has announced that it will move a new
drug, NCX 6560, into development as a statin. NicOx claims the new
drug will have broader heart benefits than currently available
cholesterol-lowering drugs. NCX 6560, a derivative of a commonly
used statin, works by stimulating nitric-oxide production in the
bloodstream. Restoring nitric oxide has been found to reduce
atherosclerosis and thrombosis, both major factors in
cardiovascular disease.
