A new study published in the medical journal Circulation has found that omega-6 fatty acids are a beneficial part of a heart-healthy eating plan. Omega-6 fatty acids are found in such foods as nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils. Previous studies had linked these acids to a increase in inflammation, suggesting that they might increase a person's cardiovascular risk. But according to a press release from the American Heart Association, researchers have found that patients in a new study who ate the most omega-6 fatty acids had the least heart disease. The scientists say these acids may work to lower cholesterol, which may reduce overall cardiovascular risk.
