Officials the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have sent a warning letter to General Mills, the maker of Cheerios cereal, saying the company made inappropriate claims about the popular cereal's ability to lower cholesterol and treat heart disease. The FDA's letter states that language on the Cheerios box suggests the cereal is designed to prevent or treat heart disease, a claim that only FDA-approved drugs are allowed to make. General Mills says the Cheerios health claims have been approved for 12 years and that the science behind them is sound. The company says it's only the wording on the label that the FDA disputes.
