Zocor may block nerve repair

New research published in The American Journal of Pathology has found that the cholesterol drug Zocor (simvastatin) may block the body's ability to repair damaged nerve tissue. Scientists working with animals found that Zocor interfered with a bodily process known as "remyelination," in which the body replaces the fatty tissue that covers and protects nerve cells and helps them transmit nerve signals. Several diseases, including multiple sclerosis (MS), result from the loss of this fatty covering. Zocor is part of the class of cholesterol drugs known as statins, which are currently in clinical trials for the treatment of MS because other studies have show they may improve MS symptoms.  Read full story >
