Calcium scans could spot heart trouble early

Scientists say they can better predict which patients with known heart disease are going to have a major cardiac event if they scan for levels of calcium in the patients' blood vessels during routine blood-vessel function tests. In a study of 260 heart disease patients, scientists found that those who underwent a calcium scan and whose levels were over 400 were at the highest risk bypass operations, major cardiac problems, or death. Researchers say these figures suggest that calcium tests were more helpful in predicting the future heart issues of patients than the standard blood-vessel function tests alone.  Read full story >
