According to a new study, combinations of statins and other medicines such as niacin, bile acid sequestrants, and omega-3 fatty acids are not the most effective ways to lower cholesterol. Researchers compared these combination therapies to high-dose statins and found that there was little evidence to suggest the combo treatments were effective compared to the statin therapy. Scientists say that if patients don't respond to a lower dose of a statin, it makes sense to try a higher dose rather than moving the patient to a combination therapy.
