An analysis of a study of more than 17,000 people has found that statins should be used to treat people who have acceptable cholesterol levels but high levels of inflammation. Researchers say their study showed that the cholesterol-lowering drugs are as effective at treating high levels of the protein hs-CRP--a measure of whole-body inflammation--as they are at treating high cholesterol levels. High hs-CRP levels have been linked with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
