The results of a new study suggest that taking vitamin B supplements is unlikely to help prevent strokes and heart attacks in people who suffer from or have risk factors for heart disease. The study--which included data on eight clinical trials and more than 24,000 people--found little evidence that taking such B vitamins as folic acid, B-6, and B-12 helps to lower the risks of these adverse cardiac events. The researchers say the finding also adds weight to the recommendation that people shouldn't take these supplements in an effort to prevent heart disease.
