British scientists have found that taking selenium supplements may increase people's cholesterol levels and boost their risk of developing heart disease. Some people take selenium supplements because they believe selenium can reduce their risk of developing cancer and other diseases. But in a new study, researchers found that selenium--which is found naturally in such foods as meat, vegetables, and seafood--was associated with an increase in cholesterol levels. Investigators say this finding is important because the use of selenium supplements has risen in recent years.
