Red Yeast Rice May Be Alternative to Statins: Study
(Reuters Health) UPDATED 2009-12-25
Results from a new small study suggest that red yeast rice supplements may offer an alternative to people who use statins to lower their cholesterol. In a study of 43 people who'd been forced to stop using statins because of muscle pain, most were able to use either red yeast rice or the cholesterol drug Pravachol for three months without having the side effects again. Both Pravachol and the red yeast rice supplement had a similar effect on bad cholesterol levels, the researchers found.
