Statins May Treat Sickle Cell Disease

Results from a new study in mice suggest that cholesterol-lowering statins may reduce the risk of a common and dangerous infection in people who suffer from sickle cell disease. In the study, scientists found that mice that were given statins lived much longer after being infected with pneumococcal bacteria than those not given statins. Children who have sickle cell disease are particularly vulnerable to infection from pneumococcal bacteria, and the researchers hope the finding in mice may also prove true in humans.  Read full story >
