Statin Alternative Shows Promise in New Study

A cholesterol-lowering drug made from laboratory-engineered thyroid hormone has done well in a new, small study. For the study, researchers gave a combination of a statin and the new drug eprotirome to 168 people who had high levels of bad cholesterol that had not been controlled by a statin alone. Investigators found that adding eprotirome to standard statin treatment did help lower the patients' cholesterol, and it was able to do so without the heart and other organ side effects that have been a problem with other thyroid-based cholesterol medicines.
