I have come to this site to see how long it takes to recover from back surgery. I have looked over all the comments in 2008. I have my back surgery Jan. 9/2009. I have come to this site to see how long it takes to recover from back surgery. I have looked over all the comments in 2008. I have my back surgery Jan. 9/2009. I had been having back prombems for a little over a year. I started seeing a Corporator for 3, months. He was not doing any good so I asked my Doctor for a MRI. He had me to see a back Doctor and the MRI showed I needed back surgery. #1 and 2 Lower Lumbar was wore out. It was causing back pain and down my left leg and left hip. I check out the Doctor before having the surgery. He had a very good reapportion. He put a steel plate and four screw, in my back. He also fused a back part. It has now been Three months and I'm still wearing a back brace and have some pain in my left hip, But it is not so much that i need medication. After one month, i feelt so good i started house cleaning and just to much. I was bored and have aways been busy. I have stopped over doing it and i am starting to heal much better. As the others have said, you need to take it easy, and do as your Doctor says. Don't over do it because you will do more harm then good. I'm 59 yrs. old and I can now longer work do to I could cause injury to my back. With the type of repairs I had done, it will be 6months to a year for me to heal up. Hope this is a help to everyone having back Surgery.

I really hope that you recover and improve quickly. If the surgery is successful you should feel better at once. I had surgery Dec. '03 and have gotten progressively worse since. I felt quite good until the surgeon yanked out the bone stimulator. From that time on I went down hill despite many months of therapy. My present doctor says the stimulator removal probably left scar tissue and caused this. I am waiting now for approval for the SCS procedure, my last hope.

It really just depends on what type of surgery, how old, and what other health problems you may have. I have had 3 back surgeries and they all varied with the length of recovery. Will you be having physical therapy after? That all has to be taken into consideration too as well as what type of job.

I also was walking 6 blocks 2times a day. At my 8 week check up they said I was doing so great I could do all my regular activities except move furniture. I started that day washing windows and vacuming and within 3 days I was back in having more back surgery. Don't rush it even if you feel good. This time it's been four weeks I feel great as far as my terrible pain I had but I only can walk 1 block and I can't sit for more than 45 min. and I have to lay flat. I don't have much energy and I am scared of the future. I will have more surgery in the future because of degenertive disc disese.

My surgery did not help me, it actually made it worse. I will never have another back surgery, I have bulging discs, degenerative discs, and pinched nerve with pain going down my left leg. I have chronic pain now and I am on disability. I take about 4 different medications for pain. I'm not trying to scare you, it may work for you, everyone is different. Good luck!

Hello Chloe,  Thank you for your input on your back surgery.  I guess we are all different but I guess I will have to give it a try.  How long have you been on disability?  Was it hard for you to get on it.  I have filed 2 times before & got denied both times.  I now found a lawyer that says they will help me with the apill of it but I can just hope it goes through for me.  It is very hard to live on $620.00 each monththat is all my husband gets from his SSI.  He has had a triple bypass, 4 heart stinis, 1/2 left lower lung removed, a AAA stinted.  But they told him he cann't get disability.  My back dr. said I have the deterating disc& also a nerve being pinched by one of my bones on the left side of my back.Cry it seems that all i can do right now is cry alot & stay in bed because i cann't take any pain meds this close to the surgery not that they were doing any good anyways.  Hope to stay intouch with you. I`ve had 5 bak surgery`s with bone grafts and CD instrumentation, and after 19 years ,I`am still in the same pain if not worse then when the injury happened.I suggest you live without the surgery.

Hey thanks Kevin about what you suggested.  I have had back pain for 3 years now & though that it might be worth a try still tossing it around not for sure yet about what I will do.Undecided
