Something has been bothering me lately. The natural order of things dictates that when you get sick, you eventually get better. My stepfather had the flu last week, three days later he was over it. My Mother had breast cancer 10 years ago, she followed all of the protocol, and she got better. So, where is the end to chronic pain? We don't ever talk about the fact that it may never go away. Days become weeks, weeks become months and we see no end in sight. I think we have accepted chronic pain into our lives, but always in the back of my mind is the question "when will it end?"
I hate that my next doctor visit will not be my last, that I will need to fill an unending number of prescriptions, and that I will always have to fight with an insurance company. While we have not made a conscious decision to avoid these issues, we do! Maybe it is just too painful to discuss, maybe there is still a ray of hope, maybe the reality of chronic intractable pain is just too overwhelming right now.
How do you make a game plan for something that you know will never end? Perhaps the same way you make a game plan for life. Baby steps, one day at a time, setting little goals, giving yourself permission to take a step back so you can go forward. It isn't easy, but it is life. I choose to accept it.
