Listen, if you can avoid getting cut open the do it.  The last thing you want is for the doc to cut through all the muscles and ligaments in your back/throat/ etc. unless they have to.

Unless you are walking around with bone on bone, grinding the nerves to pulp between them, you can still find alternative treatments, like injections.  I would go back and undo my surgery, except I was at that bone-on-bone stage, and every day I waited, I ruined more and more of my nerve roots to my lower body.

The injections worked for about oh, I think six months or so, but eventually quit taking away the pain.

Problem: Once they cut into my back, they created scar tissue where it healed together again.  Sure the fusion worked great, still pops some, but the musculature over top of it, all of it turned into scar tissue.  I heard my doc when they first discovered this phenomenon, called 'failed back syndrome', which doesn't really mean anything. It is a label for "Holy cow, look at that!"  I found out after having surgery that this happends to a startaling number of fusion recipients.

My advice: Have them go in from the side if possible, laproscopically. This leaves less trauma to the fascia on top of the surgical site.  The incision scar is only about an inch or so long, about six sutures, and little in the way of scar tissue.

    I wish you luck.

Sorry, have a bit more you should know...

I only learned this just within the last couple months.  The scar tissue will eventually heal very well, very thouroughly.  So much, in fact, that ultimately, you will lose the ability to walk unless some of it is removed. I am telling the truth, this is what the doctor said to me.  The body simply packs more and more into an area which has been traumatized.  The remedy? They go in and cut out the bulk of it, loosening up some of the fascia, so you can bend and twist some.  Problem is, it grows back again.  The body takes about two years of this before more invasive treatments are required.

Sorry to rain on your party, but you really should read up on this from learned sources (more learned than sites like this forum, I am talking about Ortho and Neuro doctor's websites.   They publish this information to inform, so use it.  Be informed. Please.

And, thank you to the site which allows us to pass along information for the betterment of others.  I really appreciate you guys and gals very much.
