Tolerance to meds

By Janda13 Thursday, January 14, 2010

Can someone please help? I have been diagnosed with Lupus SLE, Fibromyalgia, IBS, MVP, among other things. I have been taking Lortab 10/500 swapped with Norco 10/325 6-8 times a day for over 4 years. I have developed a tolerance and my pain is only getting worse. Does anyone have any suggestions on new meds I could talk to my doctor about? I don't know what to do and I am at my wits end. I have 3 children to take care of and without painkillers I cannot do it. I am new to this forum stuff so please bear with me.

ThanksCry

I've been bedridden for three months now after undergoing my third cancer surgery and radiation.  I take vicodin and zanaflex but only because I'm on so many other meds.  Now I'm taking a Medrol Pack in hopes that it cuts down on my pain which is everywhere originating in my spine from my neck down.  I have no family or friends to help me and can barely make the walk to the bathroom.  Steroids may work but are dangerous and should not be taken for long periods of time.  If the FMS/CFIDS doesn't kill me, I'll probably die from liver failure.  I've only been treated for seven years but have had these diseases since age 9.  I'm now 52.  I'm in hell right here on earth.

You might want to ask your Doctor for an extended release medication like morphine ER. Another thing, ask him for a medication that does not contain Tylenol. Tylenol has been proven to affect the liver and cause liver disease and Vicodin has a large amount of Tylenol, so when you see him ask him for those two things; a longer acting medication without Tylenol. I am sure that he would be able to come up with something as soon as you mention those 2 things. Take care,

Thank you Millie for the exceptional information.  I'm waiting for a doc to call me now, but he probably won't as he doesn't know what to do for me.  He's only a GP and not really familiar with ME/CFIDS, but he knows how bad my pain can get.  Do you really live in Key Largo?  If you do, how wonderful.  Is there Section 8 housing down there?  I'm in CT and can't take the cold anymore.  I have a bro north of Tampa, but we don't talk.  Anyway, thanks again.  Take care.

I hope that this Doc can help you, if not you might want to go to the ER to see if they can give you something until you can get in to a pain management Doctor. I used to live in the Keys, but had to move to Miami due to all of my medical issues and to be close to the University of Miami were I get my treatment. Yes, there is section 8 housing, both in the Keys and in the outskirts of Miami were I live. If you want to move to south florida, look for places in Homestead, Cutler Bay or Kendall. Those are towns that are in the outskirts of Miami and are very quite and nice, unlike the City of Miami were is very congested.

Another good thing about this area, is the medical care. The University of Miami has some great pain managment Doctor's and excellent Neurosurgeons. I wouldn't go anywhere else just because I love the care that I get here. Good luck and keep me posted, OK?

I was in bad shape as well, crazy amounts of Vicodin, or Percocets, when my wife asked my pain specialist on our first visit, this has to be bad for his liver and stomach! He agreed, and we went the route of Roxicodone, which I take the generic of course but it is oxycodone, without the acetaminophen(tylenol). Better pain relief, and no bad stuff! Why are all people not taking something similar, I know there is nothing like this for Vicodin(hydrocone)..yet, so hopefully you can take oxycodone, they(the Roxicodone), are basically oxycontin, just immediate relief, where as oxycontin is time released. As a matter of fact, thats part of my pain regiment, I am currently taking right now. I take the Roxi's for breakthrough, and oxycontin, as long acting, beats taking 6 or 7 pills a day! Something for you to consider, its different for everyone, good luck!

Ok I went back to the doctor and he changed my Lortab to 10mg Oxycontin and 5 mg Oxycontin IR for breakthrough pain. I can't tell yet if it is working and wondered the best way to take these where I can live my life. I also forgot to mention the 2 pseudotumor cerebri I have in my brain. Please helpFrown

I really hope this works for you, I hate to hear of such suffering, been there! I think you see a notice and hopefully not many side effects, I got tired for a little while, but got back to normal within a week or so. Good luck! I usually take the IR first thing in the morning, then after an hour or so take the Oxycontin, and you should be good to go for some time, and just use the others when the pain becomes too much!

I take vicodin.  For some reason unknown, oxycontin does not work for me.  I threw them away thinking they were placebos.  Everyone's body is different and reacts differently to meds.

They dont work for me either
