A study in the 2007 New England Journal of Medicine does link some Selective Serotonin Re-Uptake Inhibitors (SSRI's) and neural tube defects; however, the study did not separate Fetal Anencephaly from Spina Bifida. The conclusions drawn from the study by attorneys have been questioned and refuted by many medical professionals. More reputable study results establish a link between anti-seizure (epilepsy) pharmaceuticals. The reason for this is assumed to be the drugs' interference with the absorption of folic acid. A lack of or improper absorption of folic acid is considered an increased risk factor for giving birth to a baby with Spina Bifida. This is not simply caused by anti-seizure medications. If a pregnant woman does not consume enough folic acid through foods or supplemental vitamins, the lack of folate (folic acid) will increase the risk of neural tube defects, like Spina Bifida. The proper amount for a woman in her child bearing years is 400 mg of folic acid per day.

Hi...I was on the drug Zoloft, and Paxil...not knowing I was pregnant. My son was born in 97 with a LOT of birth defects. One being Tetrology Of Fallot...and Ive heard that mentioned on the commercials that are airing about the antidepressants..that his Dx could have been related to use of this med, prior to preganancy as well.I dont think at the time it was rx,that they knew if it was a safe category for Pregnant women...nontheless,it dosent make his problems any less valid.I hope in the future that meds can be tested more thoroughly, for the sake of the children, that have to suffer.
I'm so sorry to hear that, have you seeked legal advice? There is compensation you can receive from taking such medications. I can point you in the right direction.
