Before I can suggest what I might do in your situation, I need a little more information.  What is the original cause of your foot/ankle pain?  I'm not familiar with the term defussion.  What exactly is it – what do they do?  When you say "cutting it off," do you mean amputating your whole foot and ankle?

This certainly sounds serious so I want to be sure I fully understand what your options are before I comment.  – Karen

karen in 1984 i had my foot and ankle cushed.my ankle and hill look like a egg someone had thowed on the ground.and broke my foot in 3 places.i got still rods in my ankleso that my hill could be rebuild too.i got a big hole in my bone in mt ankle. so a defussion is when thay go in and scrap bone marrow off of me and fill up the hole.that may not help the pain,my foot is slowey dieinb anyway so i dont no what im going to do.

I'm sorry it's taken me a couple of days to get back to you – this has been a super-busy week for me.  Bless your heart, it doesn't sound like either option is great.

One thing I want to make sure you know is that amputation doesn't necessarily eliminate the pain.  I'm sure you've heard of phantom-limb pain.  Once that pain pathway has been established, it may continue to tell your brain there is pain even when the original source of the pain is gone.

Since neither option is guaranteed to get rid of the pain, I think if it were me, my next concern would be functionality.  Which way would give you the best chance of walking and getting around?

You said your foot is slowly dying.  Does your doctor think it will eventually have to be amputated anyway?  If so, then the question becomes would the defussion give you a significant amount of time and better function to make it worth going through two surgeries?   What does your doctor recommend?

I think those are the things I would take into consideration if it were me.  It's certainly not an easy decision to make.  Please keep me posted and let me know what you decide.  – Karen

Here is an article about phantom limb pain I thought you might be interested in.    Phantom Limb Pain  They say it occurs in 50% - 80% of all amputations.  I'll pray for you as you consider your options and make your decision. – Karen
