Tammy

I had thought that scoliosis was hereditary, but I'm not positive of that.  I went ahead and did a search here at care central to include many articles & post of people with scoliosis and thought maybe you might like to check them out.  http://search.healthcentral.com/query?q=Scoliosis&st=s&ver=chronic-pain&x=12&y=10

I also have a friend that has scoliosis and she sent me some articles on the subject to help me understand this problem, so thougt you might want to try them too.  http://www.iscoliosis.com/

I hope these can be of some help to you

Take care

Betty

I do not believe so. Scoliosis is a congenital defect (you're born with it). I think there may be some hereditity factor and it occurs more frequently in girls that boys. Basically, the muscles on one side of your spine are pulling the spine in one direction and the muscles on the other side are weaker and allow the stronger side pull the spine in their direction. There is almost always a counter curvature. So there will be a thoracic curve and a lumbar curve. Having scoliosis makes your spine more susceptable to other problems like bulging or herniated disks and back injuries due to spinal instability. Maybe you had an undiagnosed scoliosis from childhood and are now finding out about it after your spinal injury. What type of injury did you have? Do you know what degree of curvature you have?

I am not sure about the curvature degree. I do Know that part of my spine sticks out and I do tend to lean to the left. I am thinking about contacting the hospital where I was treated to see if my spine was xrayed. I may have injured it and it went unnoticed. I know that I didn't seek a chiropractor for almost a year after the accident. Most of the docs I have seen have said I have Scoliosis. But, I still wonder if I had a spinal injury to cause this issue. My back was fine until my accident. Could that have happened? This was in the early 90's and I broke my ankle, fractured my shoulder and my back hurt worse than all of that. I was young and really don't remember much about what happened in the ER. I DO remember the pain I was in. I was the passenger and the shifter was in the middle and I broke it in half with my body. Could a hospital be this ignorant? SCAREY!Huh?
