Cuddling Up With Pain: A Spouse's Guide

When I was 39 I found out I was pregnant and I had been on pain meds for about 3 years. and I immediately flushed all my meds and made an appt to see my obgyn. It was 2 weeks later when I got to see her and by that point I was in so much pain that my BP was very high. I was taking Lortab 10 mg 4x a day and Lyrca and Tramadol as well. My dr. told me if I was not doing well niether would my baby and after a lengthy discussion we decided I had to have some form of pain control. For the remainder of the pregnancy I took Lortab 5 mg 4x a day. The last 6 weeks I slowly came down to lortab 5 mg 2x a day. I did that in hopes my baby would not suffer from withdrawn after she was born and when she was born she did great without even one withdraw symptom. I myself had been an OB nurse and pt.s would ask, is it ok, I always told them that they needed to talk to thier dr. because each person would have different needs and outcomes. Some of my family judged me harshly that I dd not stop the meds all together but I knew I was doing my best to bring her into this world healthy but the fact remained that I had severe chronic pain and a broken oven won't work if you don't take care of it. (a crazy phrase my obgyn used) If you and your dr.feel you need to cont. some form of pain control, do the research and hang on because it is a difficult ride but a ride worth taking.  I am at peace wih what I had to do and I have a beautiful 21 month old daughter who is smart, kind and happy. What it comes down to is you are the only one who knows how good or bad you feel and with proper tmt and monitoring from your dr. you don't have to suffer so badly while you are pregnant.

Hello my name I Sarah and I'am so glad that this info was on this site.I suffer from a spinal cord disease and have had to major surgerys and cud have more.I'm 29 & just married 1 1/2yrs and all my friends are asking when we plan to have children.I'am on Opana a time release opiod 2x a day,Percoect 10/325 mg for break thru pain and another med called trazadone. I'm already considered a high risk pregnancy and worry about all the meds I'am on and how I will ba able to handle a pregnancy.I cannot get thru a day w/o pain and I know it will be increased with a pregnancy and the whole medication thing worries me.From what I understood Tylenol was the only thing that a person can take while pregnant and the dr said it's like a piece of candy to me and does nothing.I'm glad to know there is something out there that wud not be harmful, but like you said everyone is dif.  Thanks for the info.

Dear Sarah,

I hope that you will not let your health problems or your chronic pain stop you from having a baby. I strongly advise that you need to get an appt. with your OB dr. before you start trying to get pregnant so you can start on vitamins and talk with them about how you can manage your pain safely for you both. I will add that it was very hard for me because I had to cut down so much but it was worth it in the end to know that my daughter did not go through withdraw. We are tough enough to get through it because we have and still are learning how live with pain everyday. One thing I did to make it easier for myself when I was pregnant and even now was to let others help me more with everyday jobs so I would not bring on any added pain. I also have to give myself a break as a mother and not expect myself to be super mom because caring for a baby is more of a challange now that I am sick then it was when I was 24 and had my other children. I think God sent her to me because I was having a hard time accepting the things I could not longer do and having to give up my career as an ER nurse which I truely loved; she became my reason for getting up everyday and join in the land of the living. I hope that things work out for you and you and your husband will find the blessings of a baby in your lives. If you need to talk or have questions please feel free to send me a message. Take care and good luck,

I've been dyagnoised with chornic pain "Fibromyalgia" and have been on a list of pills for over a year now. Its obvious that i am having withdrawals from them AND having severe pain from not taking them. I couldn't stop all of them which my physician told me to do, so i have started two instead of all. I am having troubles getting to an obgyn. I'm worried that i can't do this.

Talking to your OB and Pain Specialist, I agree with. I'm faced with the same issue here. Chronic pain and pregnancy. I'm working to get off Oxycodone; I don't think it is a class B. I wish it were.

I'm a mother of three. I just found out i'm pregnant again. This time, i've been on Morphine 60mg 2x/day for nearly 2 years. I have a back problem that has resulted in 3 surgeries and chronic severe pain in my lower body. I am pullinbg myself off my meds right now and going through withdrawls. Whats worse is the pain. I can't sleep. I can hardly sit still, let alone take care of my other children. What do I do? I read that Percocet, Norco and Morphine are all Class C drugs. I know I can't live like this, this is why I began the meds in the first place.

I am in the same boat as you are with withdrawals from Tramadol, first pregnancy. I had to stop all my meds, which was a big list, according to my physician. I had to start back up a couple of them because i simply could not take it. Mine is a bit different. More like the first story.... Its chronic body pain, possibly Fibromyalgia. I have medicaid and it's becoming a difficult task just go get switched over to Pregnat Women & Children insurance.

My doctor ended up putting me on Vicodin ES 750, which I take up to 4 times a day as I need it. I'm due on August 15th, but just found out yesterday that I will be induced on July 27th. I'm not looking forward to the next two weeks - i'm going to have to come off these meds so that the baby won't have to go through withdrawls. To top it off, I don't have anyone to stay with me to help out with my girls, and i'm worried that my bp is going to rise more (I have issues with my bp) which may put me in the hospital. I hope that your pregnancy is going well. This is my second time having a child while having to take meds during pregnancy.
