My doctor, an internist, has learned a great deal about pain management from state-mandated CME's and the fact the American Osteopathic Association requires specialists to retake certification exams, usually every 10 years. My doctor initially sent me to a pain clinic, but it was a long drive, so he took over prescribing and increased my dosage slightly when I needed it.

Fortunately, I live in a small rural area with younger agressive doctors who believed my pain was real. Although, I saw more than a dozen specialists, including University of Iowa and the Mayo Clinic, I finally was tested for RA, who diagnosed the FM. I managed the pain without the diagnosis for more than 25 years, it was the Miniers Disease and loss of balance that did me in. I am unable to work consistantly. Sometimes am laid up for days with migraines and chronic colin problems. Now, I find the chest pain is a hernia, not my heart or liver as originally thought.
