Solution for the Pain Pinch: Music Therapy

Time for some music therapy. Music is a powerful healing force recognized around the world in many cultures. The beats, the lyrics, and the tones resonate within a person's soul. Even though personal preferences vary, the healing effects from music do not vary. Music evokes an emotional, calm...

This is so true   I love the video and the lyrics.  Living with pain creates negative emotions daily.  How long you stay in that negative frame of mind  determines the rest of your day.  The rock in the shoe is a perfect example of what we deal with.  If we stopped walking because we were furious with the rock, our journey would halt & the potential of who we are and where we are going ends.  If we learn techniques that allow us to manage and shift the level of discomfort, we are giving ourselves  control of who we are, and where we are meant to go on our journey. Nobody's journey is the same, and we all manage it differently but the key is to make it a journey worth taking.   Music has an excellent way of finding itself in the crevaces of hope and the depths of joy.  There is one of many artists that I enjoy listening to, I've shared Eva Cassidy's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" because of the pain she endured before her death.  In spite of her debilitating pain, she managed to walk onto a stage and sing from the one unaffected place she has, her soul.  Thanks again Dr. L, for sharing, and most of all compassion .

I listen to music all day, I don't know what I would do without it...I put my headset on when I sleep if I have a migraine that won't let me sleep, I listen to Enya for that....I listen from everything from Janis Joplin to Skankin Pickle, Raggae to Classical, it all depends on my mood and the level of pain and were the pain is focused at the moment...I can't dance anymore, but I still try...I also sing, performing gives me a rush that takes my pain levels down also...Let's Boogie that pain away...yes I still listen to disco!

I have gotten amazing strength from the lyrics of Van Halen's song, The Dream is Over: "Dream another dream, this dream is over." It made me sad but it made it very clear for me that it was not good to angonize over my dreams from the past that are now impossible, nor to sink into bitterness over not being able to achieve them, but just to let them go and find new dreams. - Cyndee

I think the song "learn to walk with stones in your shoes" is an excellent way of describing RSD, a good way of describing rsd to your Dr, so whoever thought up this song for music therapy is very very

imaginative!

Thanks so much,

Cool song!

I'm a big fan of music -- listening and playing -- as therapy for my pain.  I play guitar and sing when provoked, and sometimes a song gets me by the throat and wrestles me to the ground two for three throws.  The latest one is "Dover", by John Flynn, a folksinger from Delaware.  It's about Dover AFB, where they fly in the fallen from the war in Iraq.  Kind of makes you re-evaluate your situation a touch.  John is on the net and on MySpace here:  http://www.myspace.com/johnflynnfolksinger along with all sorts of other wonderful songs.  I'm a folkie, as you may have guessed, but I love all kinds of music, from jazz to classical, from Broadway to blues.  I try to get live music whenever I can afford it, even an open mike night at a local restaurant is good.  It restores me, fills the tanks.  It's as good as laughter.
