Why Breasts Can Cause Neck Pain

A recent task force has determined that women are at higher risk for developing neck pain than men. What accounts for this gender difference? A number of factors contribute to neck pain including coping skills, personalities, work environments and physical activities. But, as a patient eloquently sta...

This is the first time I've heard this discussed. With 40D size breasts, I often have neck pain and head aches. I watch my posture and try to wear proper bras, but still suffer. I don't really want breast reduction, so I'm not sure what else to do.

Even when I lost 40 pounds ( and I'm only 5 ft tall), my breast size didn't change, and my thoracic pain remained the same. I'm not sure if health insurance in Canada would cover for breast reduction.

I've noticed this as well.  I've had chronic neck and back pain because of my size for years.  I decided to have a visit with the doctor at a clinic here in Austin (http://www.interventionalpainassociates.com/) and they were able to treat my pain without surgery.  The pain management they practice has helped me get back to feeling great - like I did 20 years ago :).  I'd recommend them to anyone in the Austin area.

I have reverse lordosis in the curve of my neck and I have C6-C7 with nerve impingement and left lateral(elbow) pain and numbness in my fingers at times. I'm a DDD  size. I wonder if chest size has anything to do with it, posture etc?

Triple D's are certainly not helping your situation. With a doctor's recommendation, your insurance company will in fact pay for a breast reduction surgery to help relieve chronic neck pain. Talk with your doctor and ask for a referral to a plastic surgeon.

Another interesting fact about breast size is that general weight reduction will also help to reduce breast size. Losing some pounds can help you drop a cup size or two.

I had a whiplash injury and started having neck, upper back pain and headaches. Every doctor I saw attributed it to the whiplash injury. I was on strong pain meds, muscle relaxers and even antiseizure meds for the pain. When I went to a new doctor she asked me if I'd ever considered breast reduction for my pain. I was a full DDD size but over time my breasts had become pendulous and very heavy. My husband asked the plastic surgeon I saw if the reduction would help my pain and he said yes. And he was right. I immediately felt the relief and it's been 11 years and the pain has never returned. Thank God for a doctor who knew large breasts could cause this type pain and spoke up to get me help!
