The Good, Bad, and Ugly Days with Pain

By Christina Lasich, MD, Health Pro Tuesday, January 17, 2012
At the risk of sounding like some classic old western movie, if you have pain, then you know about the good, bad and ugly days. As soon as that sun rises, you could be facing a good day that rides into your life like one of the good guys on a white stead. Or you could be faced with a dirty rotten sco...

I like your analogy very much...

Love those old western movies by the way.  Did you see Cowboys and Aliens yet?

I think you hit upon one of my problems is that when I am feeling good I overdo it...I desperately try to catch up on everything and it burns me out.  Setting a good and reasonable pace...I think that is some very sage advice indeed.

As an aside...would very much like your opinion on a topic I just wrote about for our depression site.  The topic is generic vs. name brand medications.  Do you, as a doctor, feel that there is any difference?  Do your patients ever tell you that they feel the generic version of their pain medication, for example is...not working as well as the name brand.

If you have time...please stop by.  I would be very honored to hear your expert opinion on this.  This is a topic affecting my family directly.  My son is having seizures and has been prescribed Lamictal.  His neurologist insisted that we get the name brand as there have been more reports of break through seizures with the generic.  I am trusting his opinion.  But also wondering...is this true of other medications as well...that there could be a difference in effectiveness.

Thanks so much!

Is that "sage" as in sagebrush?? LOL... My advice is from experience. See my comment below.

I'm not a doctor, but I have read & from experience seen that medications that are name brand & not the generic, can work much better. In fact I read once that name brand rx's can be up to 15% stronger than generics, I don't know how true it is, but I have read that. I have tried to get my pain meds in brand name, but the pharmacy seems to never have enough, none at all, or my insurance won't cover name brands. Although, I am determined to get the name brand one of these times. I am also on Limictle (sp), for depression, & I was able to get the name brand three months in a row, but then my insurance refused to pay for it after that. Since I couldn't afford to pay for it myself, I was forced to go to the generic. Which my family & doctor & even once, my insurance company, has had to listen to me complain about how insurance companies should have to pay for the name brand too. Even if they don't pay as much of it, I think they should have to pay something to them.

Well I have had a bad week with pain to be honest. You know how that goes; the bad days sometimes string together. So what did I do??

Trying not to panic with fears of the week turning into months or years which has happened before, I recognized the errors in my ways. Usually I am very good about maintaining a sustainable pace, but when I took on an extra foster dog, my pace became a little too high for me. Knowing the situation was temporary, I just reached into my saddle bag and started using my zero gravity La Fuma chair more often. I set it up in the living room and my husband says, "I have not seen that for a while". He knows when I am hurting.

Now, the foster dog is off to her new home and I am back to a sustainable pace. Today is my best day in a while. Thankfully.

Hey there

Wow...you take in foster dogs?  That is so wonderful.  Is it hard to let them go when they are adopted?

Okay...I had no idea that you are not only a doctor but that you suffer from chronic pain!  May I ask what causes your pain?

So you are truly writing from your hard earned experiences.  I have so much respect for you.  I do hope you feel some relief soon.

Thanks for all that you do in helping others and sharing your personal story.  You are an amazing person.

Howdy!

No, I do not SUFFER with chronic low back pain. I live with chronic low back pain. My suffering ended long ago when I accepted the fact that my back is not strong, when I stopped using the past as a source of comparison, and when I let go of the blame (my injury was work related). Because of my experience with pain and suffering, I make a very clear distinction between the two. And even when I cannot take away someone's pain, I can help him/her resolve to end suffering.

Dog fostering is my interest and hobby that keeps me distracted from the negativity that surrounds me and brings me joy. :-)  I am the California coordinator for the Pointer Rescue Organization     (www.pointerrescue.org). Ultimately, I am also resolved to end the suffering of innocent dogs, one dog at a time with a village of help.

We should all resolve to end suffering in this world.

As always...

You blow me away with your wisdom and how you cope with life's challenges.

I read your other post and I also read your comments.  I don't have the words to describe...how that one tucked away comment (story of your daughter) made me feel.  I cannot imagine what you have been through.  Yet here you are today...helping others...finding the joy in life despite pain and yes I will say the word...suffering.

You are a very special person.  I am glad to know you.

Dr. Lasich

I was so intrigued by this concept of "suffering" vs "living with" a condition that I just wrote a depression community question of the week in your honor.

Would be most delighted if you would come by to explain in more detail how this perspective helps in coping with having chronic pain or any other medical or mental condition.
