American Pain Foundation Seeks to Relieve Chronic Pain
Greetings! It is a pleasure and an honor to be able to communicate with so many people with an interest in pain through the HealthCentral Network. As the Executive Director of the American Pain Foundation, I am in daily contact with everyone from individuals who are struggling with finding adequate pain care to the leadership in Congress, helping them understand the need for positive pain policy and legislation. The American Pain Foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life of people affected by pain by providing helpful information and support, advocating for best practice and policy, and promoting pain research. We have over 80,000 members--people living with pain, their caregivers, and healthcare professionals who help people living with pain.
I hope that in the weeks and months to come I will be able to share some helpful information about pain care and about how to get involved in improving pain care in this nation. There are many reasons why there are over 75 million people living in pain in this country: inadequate education and training for assessing and treating pain; policies that prohibit using effective pain treatments; mistaken understandings and beliefs about opioid medicines; fears in the professional community and the patient community about utilizing certain pain treatments; unhelpful beliefs and attitudes toward pain and pain care... the list goes on.
I know that the solution for improving pain care in this country lies mostly in the hands of people living with pain. Pain is epidemic, undertreated, mistreated, or not treated at all, and it is time for those of us who live with the consequences of this neglect to stand up and demand better care.
