Stolen Medications: What to Do if it Happens to You

There were a great many responses to my story about the fellow who had his opioid pain medicines stolen and the problems he had after that getting a physician to help him. One quick lesson in this situation is for people to be very careful about storing these medicines. Keep them out of sight and ...

I have a wonderful pain doc.. on a sign in his office, however, states that refills will NOT EVER be given early.  Leaving town (as I have for surgeries) for any reason?  Too bad.  Have someone steal some or all of your meds?  Again, TOO BAD.  We sign contracts with our doctors that we will be responsible for any and all of our opioids.  This means they will never be filled early.  In some states, it is not possible to have prescriptions transferred in (Texas included there).  Once transferred out, future refills will not be filled again, no matter how many refil;s you had.  You can only transfer out one refill of any narcotic.  Then it's back to the doc to discuss and get it filled;; if you happen to be back in town.  I actually scheduled this next appt in Mass (next week) for a time when I should not need to refill.

Now, some of us have state-paid and hired "helpers".  I am lucky that my aide is now my son.  Until the decision was made to hire my son, I felt I had to keep an eagle-eye on the different aides who came in.  I would not allow them into my bedroom becasue that's where I kept my meds.   It was counterproductive in that I was exhausted each time they were here and my bed was never changed by them!  That's kind of crazy!

And, I used to have a "friend" who I know was stealing meds from me.. when I figured it out, she was de-friended by me.. I count out my meds every evening for the next day.. and the bottle is so large, I am sure she thought I wouldn't miss them.. HA!  What ended up happening was I had to take fewer pills than prescribed.. for a couple of different months.  THIS is wrong and, until I figured out the problem, I was the one who suffered.   I never did file a police report  and i did not complain to my doc as I didn't want a red-flag on my chart;  I could not PROVE the crime, but, once I got rid of her, it never happened again!

Anyway, I appreciate your posting this but there are circumstances that the doctor's contract does not cover.. and we, the patients, tend to suffer for it!

PLEASE:  all who do take narcotic meds, MAKE SURE YOU REMOVE ALL LABELS before you place any pill bottles or packages into the trash!  In fact, place them into two different bags inside of the trash can, so that nobody is aware of your need for medications.  That's what I do!  The CVS pharmacy close to me actually had to remove their trash can from in front of the store for all of the idiots who were tossing their Rx info in there.  People really need to be smarter about this;  at least smarter than the crooks!!

Thank you Mr. Rowe

Your articles are very informative and will really help a great deal of us in knowing what to do if we find our selves in some of these undesireable situations.

I look forward to watching for your future articles.

There exists a very real problem in obeying the law which states that ALL the pills must be kept in the prescribed container and the reality of keeping only what you will need on your person! I am prescribed 180 of one cII pill and 120 of another CII pill. Can you see me taking out that large of a supply in front of an unsavory person? I am forced to break the law unless I want to face a gun or edged weapon! I lock up my meds at home and carry a 72hr. supply on my person. It is a sad state of affairs when pain sufferers are forced to commit a felony in order to be safe.

you can ask the pharmacist for 2 smaller bottles, one for each CII - with labels on them so that you can carry those on your person.

I had pain medication that was sent to me. Once I recieved it, it appeared to have been crumbled up a little, but where it was sealed did not appear to be messed with. I opened it and there were a whole month supply gone out of it. There were pills lose in the bag, but the lid was on the bottle. I had never had anything like this to happen before, and I didn't know what to do. The only thing I could think of was to call the pharmist and let them know the way that  I had recieved it. They talked as if I had a refill, they would send me the ones that were missing. I did not have a refill. I called my Doctor, and with being at a hosiptal you can never get him. It took me 2 weeks of calling every day and talking to a nurse, in which I really do not think they were sending him all of the notes that they claimed that they did. If they did it should not have taken 2 weeks to get a call from the Dr. This is not the first time it had taken 2 weeks to talk to my dr. Once I finally got a hold of him, he said that he believed me in which he should have, but he said it was between me and the pharmacy, I had told him what the pharmacy said and I also told him that they said if he would call them, so they can let him know what is going on, then they the pharmacy would send me the missing ones. Now to me my dr. said no promblem he would call them so they could let him know. When I called the pharmacy they told me he called and said no. Now this was in March 2008. I had a appointment with the dr on April 11, 2008. He knew I would be out of medicine on April 12,2008. Of course I asked him what was going on, and he told me that he could not give me a prescription until it was time for it, no matter that I has a months worth stolen from me between the pharmacy filling it and me recieving it. Now I have had fms,me,mps, mfs, rls, cfs and ect.. for almost 20 years. And I have never had anything like this to ever happen to me, I have always done exacally what the dr.s has told me to do. I have never, ever mis used my medicine, no matter how bad the pain is. And now my so called dr. has left me without my pain medicine. The pain is so bad that I have asked to be shot abd put out of my misery. It hurts so bad to move, to not move  even just to breathe. If any one can help me find a dr that for number one knows this disease, because if they don't know about it, they can not treat it. Please let me know of any Dr.s that can help me Please!

Hi, my wife has chronic pain that has controlled her life for the past 2 years! We could not find one doctor that could help her! We saw 20 different doctors for her condition, and none of them helped her. When her pain got so bad she could not get out of bed; we looked for a "pain" doctor. We lived in San Diego, California for our whole lives and had one of the most wonderful doctors I have ever met! his name was Dr Joel Mata. My wife was treated with respect and empathy from Dr Mata.

When my wife's Grandpa became ill we had to relocate to Texas. My wife and I saw 3 different "pain" doctors in San Antonio that were QUACKS!!!! and I would not let them treat a hamster if needed be. The Doctor in San Antonio was named Dr. Mark Moran, he was horrible, and scary! By the grace of GOD we found a Dr. Judson Sommerville in Laredo, Texas. Dr Sommerville was the most caring, and detailed doctor I have ever met! He sat with my wife for 1 hour and explain everything to her, he prescribed her the right medication and now she is living a active pain free life. If what happen to you, happen to my wife? Dr Sommerville would back her up 100% and make sure she was treated. We live in San Diego now but still to this day fly in to see Dr Sommerville in Laredo, Texas! Every year we fly in to have my wife treated by him! he is a GOD sent. I hope this helps you!

Hi - I was trying to research on here about what happens if someone takes your meds if you know or don't know about it.  Well, it happened to my hubby and I.  My hubby has numerous pills he has to take and has them divided up into his daily pill container.  Plus we have a son who is autistic and has to take various medications.  I caught my brother attempting to take my son's pills!  I startled him - he was acting as though he was getting coffee.  Then just last week, my husband saw my brother take something and go outside.  He motioned for me to come to the kitchen and told me what he witnessed.  I went outside quietly and found my brother sitting on the step.  He didn't know I was directly behind him and said - GIVE ME THE PILLS YOU JUST TOOK!  I didn't know for sure if he had taken them, but thought I'd try to play out my hand.  He jumped and about that time, I saw one of the pills fall on the step.  Luckily, he had only taken my pills which consisted of various vitamins I sort out and keep in a daily pack with the exception of immodium since I have colitis and have to take 2 a day (the most he would've gotten out of this was a cLogged up pooper).  But, he most likely thought he had my husbands as my hubby does have some pain meds (that he takes rarely and keeps them locked up) - HOWEVER, he does take Coumadin and of course in the right dosage it could kill my brother.

Upon further investigation,  I have found (at least in the state of PA), that had my brother taken something that was prescription and been caught with the bottles, WE would've been charged also unless they would've had a police report on file from us that we notified the police of the theft!  I have already made it clear to my parents that my brother will be followed everywhere he is in my house.  If he has to go to the bathroom, someone will wait outside the door.  You would think at age 37, he would have more sense than my 10 yr. old autistic son, but I guess not.  My parents are elderly (in their mid-late 70's) and have to LOCK up their valuables and medicines in their bedroom to keep them away from him when he visits.  What kind of life is that?

Please just remember that if someone takes a pill bottle (prescription) from your home and is caught - YOU are liable and can be prosecuted unless there is a police note on file as to the theft.

My medication was stolen by a so called friend, I called the police first thing to make a report, gave them his name. Well I had to go through a 4 hr interview before they would even release the police report to me to take to my dr.I have been with my dr. 8 years and she had no problem replacing an alternative pain med and anxiety med, if your dr. knows u and trust u, there should not be a problem. She did not ask me to take a urine test or anything. These people who steal medication should be prosocuted to the fullest extent! I have learned my lesson and I'm gonna be putting mine in a safe deposit box at my bank. The drug addicts who make false police reports should also be punished to the fullest extent!

7/ 6/11 10:17am

I was holding a Moving Sale on Memorial Day week-end and unfortunately, the people that 'Promised' to help me, decided they weren't going to help me, nor help me to move. A female Missionary from 'The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints' (Mormons) I was getting involved with decided this on her own. I have a back disease 'Intractable Back Pain' and have difficulty getting around. I was having things stolen left and right for three days but needed as much money as possible in order to move. Along with things being stolen, I had a man approach me and offered to 'Pay me well' for sexual favors, another approached me all frantic like asking me to give 'him' $500.oo because his wife passed away 3 years ago, had 3 children, lost his job and his house was going under foreclosure. I couldn't sympathize with his 'Scam' since 'I found' my Companion of almost 18 years shot in the head in Feb 2010, my best/only friend and Homemaker died Nov 2010, I had my life savings stolen, I was removed from the 'home' I was moving into and left at the one I was leaving that the Bank now owned and I had to be out May 31st and I had my Narcotics stolen from my bedroom (who knows what else due to the moving).

I called the State Police and notified the Officer what had occurred which all happened the same day but all the Officer did was tell me to call if the man returned that wanted the sexual favors. No Police Report was taken or mentioned if I wanted to file one. Then again, the State Police never filed a Report or Statement when I was assaulted 3 times by three different people or had my life savings stolen, so I guess I wasn't expecting them to file one for the Narcotics stolen. On June 5th, my 47th birthday, I ended up putting 'everything' into storage and went Homeless.

My MRI has a Diagnosis from 2007 saying I have 'Intractable Back Pain' and have 'further bone degeneration'. The APRN I see only gives me 15mg of Oxycodone x5 a day. I'm in pain almost 24/7, have extreme weight loss (last checked was 86.9, normally 115), I have trouble sleeping and eating due to the pain, spasms throughout my left leg (now I get tingly sensations entire left side of body, fingers to toes), my legs will give out and at times I can't walk at all. I looked up to see what 'Intractable Back Pain' was and discovered it was a 'Disease' (which I should be on as much pain medication to ease my pain and discomfort as possible), there is 'No Cure' for and can 'Kill You'. I printed the Booklet and faxed it to my APRN who called me to inform me that I 'Do Not' have 'Intractable Back Pain'. The Doctor only wrote that I did because I said I was in pain 24/7. I just went in for an MRI at the Hospital, I 'never' saw a Doctor. I 'had' an appointment at a Medical Center to be looked at since I had gone to see someone my APRN had me see and brought my 'Dental' Records in by mistake and 'still' diagnosed me! Everyone she sent me to Diagnosed me 'supposedly' but only found out my Diagnosis when I picked up my MRI Report and Films. For reasons only known by my APRN, she had my appointment at the Medical Center 'canceled'. I 'tried' to get another Doctor but was 'Denied', saying I had to put up with and learn to get along with my APRN.

The place I was moving to this Sunday (July 10th), in order to get Medical help in a different State, since I have been 'Corrupted in Connecticut', fell through and I am again going Homeless.

I'm not sure if the State Police have to write a Report or take a Statement if Narcotics are stolen and am not sure if a Hospital/Doctor, APRN, can Diagnose you with something that says will 'Kill You' if you don't have it...

I 'Honestly' think the State Police just didn't do their job like they 'Neglected' and 'Denied' me for the other incidences and my APRN is 'Lying' to me because she is actually taking me 'off' the medication making me suffer, whether she actually knows or knew what I have or not which is why she never told me and she knows that what she's doing to me is illegal. Medical Malpractice.

To be even further Honest, with the Traumas that I have gone through in the less than 2 years, already having PTSD, the pain I have and how my life has become 'Worthless' since I can no longer do anything, the effects from having 'Intractable Back Pain' is also depression and suicide which is actually becoming an option for me because I obviously have No 'Rights' when it comes to anything!  I've even been Denied Section 8 as well as other Housing in CT..  I take that back, as far as me killing myself... my State Social Worker told me "I can't advise it but it's up to you." (I recorded this during our conversation).
