Be more informed people!

Reported by the FDA 2 years ago-

Cymbalta has been linked to serious side effects including heart defects and persistent pulmonary hypertension in the newborn (PPHN) when Cymbalta is taken by the mothers during pregnancy.

In July of 2006, the FDA issued a Health Advisory advising people of serious side effects if taking Cymbalta  while pregnant. The New England Journal of Medicine published a study that showed mothers who took Cymbalta during the second half of their pregnancy were six times more likely to have a baby with PPHN or heart defects.

Eli Lilly, makers of Cymbalta, have allegedly failed to adequately warn users that birth defects are a possible side effect of taking Cymbalta during pregnancy.

Eli Lilly announced today, February 26, 2007, that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the antidepressant Cymbalta (R) (duloxetine HCl) for the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). However, Cymbalta is known to cause anxiety once side effects begin in roughly 50% of the population.

Cymbalta tends to cause intestinal problems as well as joint pain more often than other Cymbalta side effects while a person is still taking the medication. Much like other antidepressants, Cymbalta causes side effects in the very symptom they are promoted to solve. Hence, Cymbalta joint pain.

People who have taken this-

And if you deside to STOP taking it...WOW-

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Anorexia – No longer having a desire to eat.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Apothous Stomatitis – Painful red and swollen open sores on a mucus membrane of the mouth commonly called a canker sore.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Ataxia – Loss of the ability to move the body with coordination.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Arterial Fibrillation – A condition of abnormal twitching of the muscles in the blood vessels that moves the oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body.  The unusual twitching is rapid and irregular and replaces the normal rhythm of contraction of the muscle, which sometimes causes a lack of circulation and pulse.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Blood Cholesterol Increased – An abnormal condition where there is a greater amount in the blood of the oily/fatty substances known as cholesterol.   Cholesterol is a necessary part of living cells (along with proteins and carbohydrates).  Because cholesterol only slightly dissolves in water, it can build up on the walls of the blood vessels, therefore blocking/decreasing the amount of blood flow, which causes blood pressure to go up.  If not corrected, this condition is associated with coronary artery disease.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Blood Creatinine Increased – A greater than normal number of creatinine or muscular chemical waste molecules in the blood.  Creatinine plays a major role in energy production in muscles.  Since creatinine levels are normally maintained by the kidneys, Blood Creatinine Increased is an indicator of kidney malfunction or failure.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Blood in Stool – The blood that is in your bowel movement usually comes from any place along your digestive tract (from your mouth to your anus).  The stool can appear black and foul-smelling (usually from the upper part of your digestive tract) or red or maroon-colored (usually from the large intestine area).  Hemorrhoids are the usual cause for blood in the bowels.

8.    Cymbalta withdrawal - Bundle Branch Block Right – These are specialized cells in the upper right heart chamber and are the heart’s pacemaker.  They send electrical signals to the heart that keeps it beating or contracting regularly.  Normally the signal goes to the lower heart chambers at the same time through the bundle of His (hiss) on both the left and right sides of the heart, so the lower chambers contract at the same time.  When the bundle is damaged on the right side, the signal does not fire at the same time as the left, which changes the pace of blood flow.  This can lead to a person fainting.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Cardiac Failure – A heart disorder where the heart does not function as usual and may completely stop working.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Cardiac Failure Congestive – The body is asking for the heart to supply more blood than it is capable of producing and maintaining.  Normally, a body can tolerate an increased amount of work for quite some time.  The condition is characterized by weakness, shortness of breath, and a fluid build-up in the body tissues causing swelling.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Cold Sweat – The skin is clammy and moist and you feel chilled.  This is a reaction to a shock or pain as well as to fear and nervousness.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Colitis – A condition where the large intestine becomes irritated from the use of the drug.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Coronary Artery Disease – A condition where the blood vessels that mainly carry the blood away from the heart become clogged up or narrowed usually by fatty deposits.  The first symptom is pain spreading from the upper left body caused by not enough oxygen reaching the heart.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Dehydration – An extreme loss of water from the body or the organs of the body as in sickness or not drinking enough fluids.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Diplopia – The condition where a person is looking a one object and instead of normally seeing just the one object he sees two.  This is also call double vision.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Diverticulitis – There are pouches or sacs on the inside of the intestines that look like fingers.  This increases the area for the body to absorb nutrients as they pass through the intestines.  These sacs become irritated and swollen and end up trapping waste that would normally be eliminated, causing pain and constipation.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Dysarthria – The inability to control the mouth muscles when forming words so the words are not clearly spoken and heard.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Dyslipidemia – The normal fat metabolism in the blood is interfered with.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Dysphagia – Trouble swallowing or the inability to swallow.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Ecchymosis – When a blood vessel breaks and creates a purple discoloration of the skin.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Edema – An abnormal build up of excess fluids in the cells, tissues, and the spaces between the tissues creating swelling.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Edema Peripheral – The abnormal build up of fluids in the tissues of the ankles and legs causing painless swelling in the legs, ankles, and feet.  If you squeeze the swollen area it leaves an indentation on the skin for a few minutes.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Ejaculation Delayed – The man is not able to release sperm either during sexual intercourse or with manual stimulation in the presence of his sexual partner in spite of his wish to do so.

CAUSED BY WITHDRAWAL TO SO MANY USERS. STOPPED USING CYMBALTA AND SO FAR I HAVE EXPERIENCED NIGHTMARES THAT HAVE CAUSED ME TO FEAR GOING TO SLEEP. IT IS INCREDIBLE THAT THE FDA HAS ALLOWED THIS ( AND MANY OTHER DRUGS) TO GO ON THE MARKET WITH SO LITTLE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE TRUE EFFECTS, GOOD  OR BAD. IT IS ALL ABOUT MONEY AND WHO IS BEING PAID OFF BY THE DRUG  COMPANIES.!!

Cymbalta helps pain when you get a higher dosage. You have to start out low then have yor doctor slowly increase it till you feel something.

Hello, I tried Cymbalta for three months last year. It made my liver enzymes elevate. It also caused me to want to eat everything in the house that was edible. I didn't like it, It did not help my fibromyalgia pain or depression. It was expensive even with insurance. I have told my Dr's I want medication that has been around for a while, like at least twenty years or so. I am trying to exercise more, walk and swimming also helped. There are times that my muscles just cannot support me, like raising from sitting with my baby grandaughter. In the water you can move freely, it feels wonderful while you're in the water but don't over do it or it will get sore. I have learned recently some great tips from some of you here on this chat site. One being that I need to plan my day when that day comes. It all centers around the pain level. Of course I don't miss Dr appointments or other important appointments. But I do tell the Dr as soon as I see him what level of pain I am in. Hope this helps. Sandy

I have been put on cymbalta twice and think this stuff is a total joke. The first time I was 24 and it actually made me depressed and caused me to gain a lot of weight. The second time I was 27 (my current age) and was also on lyrica. I had the same results. The lyrica temporarily helped with the pain, but only minimaly and I am currently on no meds at all because of a lack of income and no medical insurance. Things have been like this for me since I was twelve. I hope you end up having better luck receiving treatment than I have.

4/25/09 12:30pm

zyprexa caused me to gain a lot of weight.cymbalta was a pain in the wallet but didn't help pain.i've been off cymbalta a long time thank God.lyrica knocked me out for at least 12 hrs.it scared other people in the house.they were unable to wake me.i was out cold! i was still in a fog after 12 or 13 hrs of sleep.i'm really glad to be off lyrica too.mostly i try to take it easy, take tylenol, sometimes flexeril, lay down or sit & an ice pack helps.i didn't think it would but it does!it helps my lower back discs.i've been told heating pads but they don't seeem to work nearly as well or fast.it's worth a try.

4/26/09 3:15pm

I experienced some of the same with the lyrica. I had really bad nightmares too though that I couldn't wake up from. My daughter would yell and yell and no response. My mom would have to get her up. Even though I am no longer taking the lyrica, I still have a hard time waking up. It isn't as bad as it was though. I also have found that I have to absolutely cut corn out of my diet completely. I have known since I was a teenager that I am allergic to corn but was told to just treat the symptoms and not actively cut it out of my diet becasue corn is in so many foods and beverages in so many different forms. I had to take it out of my diet though. It is tough, but worth it and I have lost 12 pounds since I first began actively cutting it from my diet. It seems to be helping overall with the fibro flare-ups too.

4/25/09 7:23pm

Yes, i too, have tried a low dosage of cymbalta a few years back..anyting after 60mgs for me was too much..While it kind of helped with my depression, It did nothing for my pain...Alot of these pharmaceutical companies are now saying that half of the antidepressants are good for fibro patients, but they are not..it's just another way or scan for them to make more money on these  products..It made me dizzy and I didn't care for it..It's not healthy to be on any anti-depressant for any long period of a time becuase your neuro system becomes accustomed and it's like a domino affect to your whole body..I would try to go natural or at least holistic before I allow another toxic chemical into my neuro system again..I had a bad experience...Please be careful and ask many questions...afterall, if doctors are always making us "wait for them" when it's our appointment time, make them wait on you when you are in their offices. take your time and ask 100 ????'s if possible...good luck..hope this helps.

I'm taking the lowest possible dosage (20 mg) and it's been a godsend.   My aches are gone, the anxiety is gone, and my appetite is under control.  I've already lost 5 pounds and my weekend binge eating has stopped.

I don't think that any drug is effective for all the population, some may have issues with it because it's just the wrong chemical composition to help their symptoms.

Before this I took Celexa for 8 years, and Cymbalta has it beat.

My Doctor is boing to change me from Celexa to Cymbalta for Fibromyalgia. Were you on any other antidepressant before cymbalta? If so, How did you change over?

The celexa does not seem to be working any more and has made the fibro pain worse. I have gain a ton of weight, so I am afraid of reactions changing over.

I have started to eat a healthy diet and with fibro pain it is hard to exercise. Any suggestions or ideas would be great.

Yes, I took Celexa for many years, and while it did help my anxiety it did nothing for my aches and pains.

I was weaned off the Celexa for several months.   I noticed that my appetite abated somewhat as well as my aches are gone.

I've learned the hard way that I'm one of those people who cannot go without chemicals to balance the anxiety.  I credit the pharmaceuticals companies for helping me to keep my job.

My doctor tried me on three of the fibromyalgia treatments, one of which was cymbalta.  I would not recommend any of them.  They all help the pain somewhat BUT the side effects are horrible!  I gained thirty pounds of fluid weight on the cymbalta and now have congestive heart failure which I did not have before I took it.  I have lost some of the fluid but the damage is done. I was blessed that the withdrawls were just bad, not horrible as taking it was.  I have been off of it now for two months and I am just starting to feel alive again but the pain of course is even worse than it was before I started to take it.  Dying from congestive heart failure is not a good trade off for just 6 months of mediocre pain relief.  There is not cure for chf, so I guess I will pay the rest of my life for trying to have a life again.  For anyone who had fibro, please learn from my mistake.....learn to live with the pain because the alternative is a killer.

OMG i'm so sorry.i had no idea it could do that !!!FrownCrydon't they test meds BEFORE they put them on the market????Yell

Yes, they do test medication before it goes on the market BUT the side effects are stated in a very unassuming way so as not to allert you to the possible major problems that they can cause.  Swelling and weight gain are listed as side effects BUT the reason for them is not.  The same goes with many major drugs.  These side effects are a manifestation of the fact that something is wrong in the body causing blood flow to be imperfect to the areas involved....swelling of hands, eyes, legs abdomin, etc.  ie: congestive heart failure is the hearts inability to pump blood effeciently to all parts of the body, carrying away excess and waste products from those areas and replacing it with oxygen rich blood.  Something makes this happen, in this case it is damage to the left ventrical of the heart, making the heart incapable of pumping blood away efficiently and replacing it with fresh blood.

People are individual and their reactions to drugs are also individual.  Researchers can say you were pre-disposed to a certain problem and thus say the drugs did not cause the problem when in reality they did.  Then the side effect is not listed until enough people have the problem and it is recalled or at least listed as a possible side effect. Research on drugs cannot test every individual person so they assume their random trials are correct and we the people who use it are really the actual trial of any drug.  Please be careful of all drugs, from the simplest to the most complex, they are not natural and as chemicals can cause some very bad problems for you.

Yes.....doesn't it give you a warm, fuzzy feeling to know you are a statistic. Surprised

9/10/10 4:51pm

I also took cymbalta for my chronic pain (dr. said it helps with depression but also has some pain qualities} but I, too, did not feel a difference.  I am now on Savella 50 mg. 2 X daily and think I feel a difference but very minimal.  Pain level is approx.8 taking my meds.
