Foot pain with no diagnosis after countless tests.

By neil Friday, October 16, 2009

Hi everyone

I've suffered with left foot pain for about a year now, I've had every test under the sun (MRI, CT, nuclear medicine, nerve test, biomechanical) with no clear diagnosis.

How it started:

The pain started one day out of the blue after a long bike ride. On the day itself no problems, the day after was fine too, but that evening as I got up to walk away from an interview, I practically crumpled. It was very difficult to walk due to a sharp pain emanating from the heel area of the foot (specifically the soft part on the inside of the heel, about an inch in from the sole and back of the heel). That night and the following couple of days there was some swelling in the area.

Current symptoms:

Since then I've struggled with the pain almost daily. The pain comes on after walking any distance longer than 30 mins or so. It stops hurting when resting. It has not swelled up since. It seems to be aggravated when I walk in 'proper' shoes, sneakers seem to prolong the amount of activity I can do before the pain starts. No numbness or pins and needles above the ordinary.

I've seen a physio for 12 months and a foot specialist for 5 months, but no one has been able to help. The only anomaly was the nerve test that indicated there was some damage to the S1 nerve, but why would the foot have become swollen in the first place if that was the cause? Tarsal tunnel was suggested but ruled out by the same nerve test.

So I'm very much at the end of the line, and really looking to get some help. If anyone can offer any advice or has had a similar experience I'd love to hear from you.

All the best

Neil:

I am not sure about your pain, and I am sorry you are suffering.  A friend of mine had a severe pain in her heal and went to an acupunturast(sp) who had her come for a few treatments and it worked wonderfully.  I usually am traditional medicine all the way, but it something works, it may be worth a try.

good luck and God Speed
