Thanks for the excellent article, Cort!  You did a great job of condensing a long and somewhat complicated saga into a very understandable and interesting story.

 

Although XMRV turned out to be a huge disappointment, it did at least bring a lot of attention to ME/CFS, which has been ignored or discounted by most of the medical community for far too long.  Hopefully this will lead to more money for research to pin down the real cause(s) of ME/CFS.

Cort, thanks for publishing this summary.  Sullivan at LeftBrain/RightBrain blog has a good summary of recent events associated with the XMRV controversy.  In addition to CFS, some have suggested a link between XMRV and certain strains of autism.  As with other theories relating to autism and CFS that aspire to link a broad spectrum condition (in terms of how it is manifested and the range of severity), the link between XMRV and autism, like the linke between XMRV and CFS, has not been scientifically demonstrated.  http://leftbrainrightbrain.co.uk/2011/11/xmrv-researcher-sued-jailed/
