Woodworking brings me Serenity

By WoodSerenity Tuesday, September 25, 2007

Fredtwork Hawk on Stand

My name if Vicki Gordon and I live in Holland, Michigan. I have lived with extreme pain in my lower back, left leg and my neck for the past 13 years. I have severe nerve damage in my left leg and there is no longer anything they can do except treat my pain. I have an implanted Dorsal Column Stimulator and an implanted Morphine Pump.

Woodworking for me helps to keep me thinking positive and looking forward to the next project. It has helped get me past some serious depressions and it has helped me feel that I have a purpose. Creating a beautiful object out of a hunk of wood gives me the pleasure that doing physical things like, water skiing and snowmobiling, used to give me.

My favorite type of woodworking is Fretwork, which is what I have submitted. However, I also do segmentation, intarsia, trinket boxes, wooden baskets and refinishing old furniture. Just about anything that has to do with wood I will try. I love the feel and the smell of wood and there is nothing more pleasing that to run my finger over a beautiful piece of wood that I have just cut to be a beautiful art object!

Really beautiful piece!

You mentioned that you do intarsia, which I am fascinated with.  Anyone with the patience and insight to put some of those pieces together is just definitely deserving of respect!

I have to admit that I am a tad jealous, as well.  Due to neck and joint issues, I have had to give up most of my woodworking.  Instead, I have turned to working stone in small pieces, which...is very satisfying in a different way.  Stone is, believe it or not, easier to work as it doesn't have the grain to contend with.  It still has the living feel and it's own personality as does wood, though.

I love to read that someone else gets lost in their work to the point of forgetting their pain and being able to work past it.  It's amazing how that happens.

I would like to see some of your other pieces, if possible.  Do you by chance have a website?  Or would you be willing to post them in your photo album?

Now that I've managaed to babble on (lol) please feel free to peruse my work (including a few pieces of older wood work) in the gallery at stormcarver.com.

Eagle Sculpter I have though about trying this out. I have read some books and wanted to start but I didn't think it would be helpful. From what I see it really dose help out a lot of people. Is there a small way to start and not spend a lot of money? This is a beautiful engal and I hope you share more here so. God bless you and your talent.

Vicki~

I also live(d) in Holland, MI..I was shocked when I read your story here. Partially because of your location and also because of the similarities in our condition(s). I now live in Kalamazoo, MI, just about 45 mnts south of Holland. I moved here in 2000 to attend College at WMU and that is when my physical problems started, basically. I have a long story and a list of disabilities of approx. 24 and counting. Fibromyalgia is one of them going all the way down to what is the worst at the moment-Complete Lumbar Fusion from L/1-S/1 as well as SI Joint Dysfunction needing a double Fusion as well. I am 39 yrs old and needless to say all of this hit me hard especially being so young when it all began. I do have Depression, Anxiety, Agoraphobia, Post Traumatic Stress as well as Post Concussive Traumatic Pain Injury/Syndrome, Migraines.. to name a few.lol..I recently had a Neuro-Psych Exam done w/results, which wasn't good at all. I am curious who your Dr's are.. I lived in Holland for about 15 yrs and have been here for almost 9 yrs. I do have a daughter that lives with her Dad in West Ottawa area and will be Graduating next year. As far as the Topic goes I am very much into Art but obviously there is not much of anything I can do right now, even on the meds I am taking. We are on the hunt for another Surgeon as mine said my surgery is way out of his league and will be going to the Cleveland Clinic next month. I am also going to another surgeon at U of M. Then I will decide who I want. I have come such a long way to have this major set-back..very depressed right now about it all. Like I said, it is a long story..of what I will mention that basically I was with a Dr for almost 5 yrs that didn't care for me properly and as a result here I am now. Never got any referrals through, was never told about any of my tests..when I obtained my Records when I switched Dr's I was appalled! I always wondered what was wrong with me and I think that is the worst! The not knowing.. I have known about Fibromyalgia but they thought it could also be MS... Yup, long story. Well, I should say goodbye for now but if there is a way that we could email or something I would be willing to give mine to you.

Thanks for yout time and much blessings to you.

(gentle hugs)
