Peripheral Neuropathy

My name is John I'm 67 years old, 1 year ago I had my cancerous Kidney removed, and after that I had chemotherapy.

I read on the internet lot of stories like my, people having trouble with pain and burning feet. The Doctors just prescribe LIRYCA, NEURONTIN, and CYMBALTA, which I found out don't help mulch, and doctors don't know how to treat.

During chemotherapy, I started to have terrible pain and burning on my feet. I asked my Oncologist what is going on, he told me that I have Peripheral Neuropathy. Dr. put me on LIRYCA it helped little, but I still was suffering specially at night. Before chemotherapy Dr. told me it would be good idea to gain some weight because many people can't eat during chemotherapy. Chemotherapy didn't stop me from food so I gain over 20 pounds. I decided to go on the diet to lose some of that weight. I researched on the internet what foods to avoid, in losing weight. I found out that I should avoid bread, pasta, and all food that is made from wheat (flour) it will help me to lose weight, after two weeks staying of the bread and all wheat products, I started to lose weight, and I discover that my pain and burning in my feet stopped, so I started to eat little bit of my fevered food which is the bread. The pain and burning came back same way as it was before, so again I stopped for few days and my feet are ok. During my experimenting with my diet I was checking my sugar, and I discover that every time I ate bread or something made from wheat flour, my sugar would spike between 130-170, so I asked my doctor to check me for Diabetes, after the test dr. told me that I'm not diabetic, but I know that every time I eat bread my sugar goes over 130, my burning in my feet starts again.

I read somewhere on the internet, that when you are allergic to GLUTEN you may have some symptoms like that. I asked my doctor what is going on, and I asked to sand me for Gluten test, it show that I am not allergic to gluten, but he told me to stay away from wheat products since I know what is causing my problem.

PS, I asked Pharmacists  what I can use to help me to go thru the day and night if I have the burning, when by mistake I eat some wheat product, he told me to use LANACANE  cream with (Benzocaine 20 %) that helps to alleviate the pain and burning little bit. There is another cream that works better L-M-X-5 with (5 % lidocaine) but it is pretty expansive.

So this is my story, if I stay of wheat products I am ok.

I hope my experiment will help some people to go thru life little bit easier.

Good luck.

John,

Thank you for your info. I think that I will stop eating the breads and pasta and see what happens. I have neuropathy of the spine, and the pain is so bad at times I can hardly stand it. I am now taking Lyrica and it is helping alot. One thing Lyrica has done is give me a good nights sleep.

I  appreciate your information. I,too am troubled with burning foot pain and it's really nasty...am on neurontin which helps keep 'the bugs from crawling up my legs' but nothing helps my feet. I keep 3 small ice packs in the freezer and that is what has helped me the most...one at a time until they thaw, etc. I am certainly going to try eliminating wheat products and will be anxious to see if that has any effect. I notice that some nites are much worse than others so perhaps it's because I  didn't have as large of intake of wheat that day...who knows, but it's worth a try! Good luck with your 'venture.' I hope you found your cure!
