IC Pain Management Article

By archidiva Saturday, July 03, 2010

Here is a good article for those with Chronic Interstitial Cystitis Pain:  http://www.ic-network.com/handbook/painmed.html

I'm searching for answers because my body is building up a tolerance to my current pain management regimen of 20 mg oxycontin 2/day and 15mg oxicodone 5/day.  I'm considering asking my new pain doc to put me on a dilauded pump.  I wish the medical community still used demerol.  That worked great when they use to dispense it in the ER.  If anyone has suggestions, I'm all ears.

HI,  In response to your question you have a lot of leway yet in your dosage and as far as I know have not even tried pain patches. I Am not aDr. but I think your jumping the gun.Bonnie

Bonnie,

Please share what you know.  My pain doc told me that for my weight and height he could not increase my dosage.  So, I'm only going by what the 'professional' told me.  By the way, I got a 2nd opinion and that doc just responded to my question of whether he would do any thing different.  I didn't ask about increasing with the 2nd doc.

Also, I tried the patch and it did nothing for me.  I'm wondering about a dilaudid pain pump or if I do have room to go more on the oxycodone, maybe a oxycodone pump.

I know YOU ARE NOT A DOCTOR but any info anyone can provide me will help me pose the correct questions to these doctors.

Thank you.

dear archidiva, I don't know what your dosage is but there isa really wide range for oxycodone especially if you have been on a lot of years. Idon't know your weight but over 100mg is not uncomen. I hope I wasn't out of turn I just think you could run into complications with a pump. I am new to a computer so bear  with me.  bonniepeace

Bonnie,

You most certainly were not out of turn.  I'm just learning and searching for the correct questions to pose to the doctors, that's all.  Thank so very much for your input.  It is sincerely appreciated.

Hi archidiva,

There is no upper dose limit for opioid medications, but they do have to be increased gradually so you don't overdose.  I suspect your doctor just isn't comfortable prescribing more than what you're currently taking.  Sometimes changing to a different opioid medication helps.  There are a number of different options available.

If you're interested in looking into a pain pump, I'd recommend you check out our forum.  That's where everyone gathers to discuss anything to do with intrathecal pain pumps.  There is an excellent ongoing thread entitled “Willing to share experience with intrathecal morphine pump implant” that was started and is maintained by Bob Englebardt.  It's a pretty long thread, but rest assured your post will be read and answered.  Just click on the link above to get there.  You'll find a lot of good information already there; then if you want to ask a question, just click on the last page and post your question.

(Note:  If you've never been to the forum before, you'll have to register separately from your registration here on ChronicPainConnection.  You can, however, use the same e-mail address and password if you like to make it easier to remember.)

I hope you're able to find a treatment that will bring you relief.
