Today made for a long day. I had a follow up visit to a doctor that I was referred to for arthroscopic surgery. After a lot of discussion, that idea was put to rest. He doesn't think that type of surgery would have any lasting effect. It might feel better for a while, but months later I'd be back in the same condition. I'm glad to find that out before being cut open.
He suggests jaw surgery to lower my bottom front teeth to get rid of the gap between my rear teeth when my jaw is closed. He also mentioned the possibility of orthodontics. Not really what I wanted to hear. I had orthodontics after my accident in '98, it was a long and painful experience. Coupled with the pain from the joints and the facial pain, I doubt it would be bearable. I already dismissed this approach when another surgeon had suggested it. She agreed that it could be unbearable.
I called the doctor who referred me, who is the same doctor I would use for joint replacement with custom joints. His quick opinion was that jaw surgery or orthodontics could cause the joints to lock, or at the very least cause more damage to them. He admitted he didn't remember the specifics of my case, which I don't mind since I've only seen him once. I'm going to schedule an appointment to discuss what we should do next.
I almost feel like I'm playing a painful game of rock, paper, scissors.
