I had a intrathecal morphine pump put in last November 2007 and I tried dilaudid too and I couldnt

By jody Sunday, April 20, 2008

tolerate either one. I was on Methadone for 10 yrs prior to the pump being put in. So after many months of trying and going thru withdrawl from both methadone first, then morphine second, to get on dilaudid and that not working I had to go through withdrawl one more time to get back on the original dosage of methadone I had been on. My question for Dr. Krusz is this:

Do you have any idea why the pump would not be sucessful for me? I still have it in me and it is just filled with saline for now so in case I want to try it again I can. I am so scared to do that though. Do you have any suggestions for me. I have Muscular Dystrophy and have pain constantly. My muscles dont relax and I have been fused already in c56,c67 and have lombard disc problems as well as scoliosis as well. I know I will have pain for the rest of my life and I really want to get the best help I can. It sounds to me like you are very knowledgable about this and I would appreciate your help.

Thank you so much

Jody

Have you heard Dr. Krusz that they are not implanting intrathecal pumps anymore at all?

Dear Jody,I'm So Sorry the Dilaudid did'nt work for you.I have a friend who has the pump,he said he has fenthanal, and something else in his.He said they can mix the pain meds you need to put in the pump.I've had several spine surgeries. So far the Dilaudid is working good for me.I had my pump put in Nov.07,but the catherer has already broke.Awaiting surgery for repairs.Maybe you can asl your Dr. if they could mix the meds to work for you.I wish you the Best of Luck.Your Friend,Deb

Hi Deb

Thanks for your answer to my post. I am sorry you have had so many surgeries too. I am glad that the pump is working for you but you said you need repairs huh? Did you know there is a recall on most of the pumps? It is a sort of warning recall of sorts. I guess there have been alot of people developing a mass at the cathater tip. I read about it on othis site. I called my pain clinic and she checked into mine and it is one that has had problems. So I have to watch it. I can check into them mixing the meds but I am back on methadone right now and pretty happy with that for now. I would love to chat again with you so if you feel like it just let me know, Good Luck with the repair. Thanks again:)

Hello Jody

Welcome to the Chronic Pain Connection, it's really nice to meet you!

I was wondering if you have looked at the conversation on going over in the forum area on pain pumps?  If your not aware of it, I just wanted to let you know about it so you can go over & join that discussion too.

It's at ;  http://forums.healthcentral.com/discussion/chronic-pain/forums/a/tpc/f/7251032/m/8491036

It's a pretty long discussion but there is participation every day, so you may find some idea's on medications or maybe others who have shared your similar situation with the different medications.

I hope your doing well & Take Care

Betty

Hi Betty

I just read your post. I am still so confused on how to use this site that I didnt even know you had responded to my post. Thank you so much for your response first of all. I have read so much on posts that people have written about the pumps. I cant believe how many people have had good luck with them and I dont understand why I didnt. I have read a few that werent so good but I am glad that is has helped so many. I am still just taking methadone for pain and ibuprophen when needed. I go to a class to help me deal with pain as well. I wish so much there were an chronic pain support group here that I could go too. The internet is very nice but I really would enjoy talking to people in real life. WHen did you get sick Betty? I hope we can chat now and then and I hope I learn how to use this site better.

Take care and thanks again :)

Hello Jody

So happy to hear from you again.

This site is a bit different than most other pain sites, it took me a couple of weeks to get myself aquainted to it too.  Don't worry, you'll get it figured out.  Several months ago I created a sharepost that I tried to explain all the different abilities of the site with links to the different areas, so here is the link to the post if your interested.  http://www.healthcentral.com/chronic-pain/c/25343/16260/entire-site

If you created a homepage, you can set your self up to have emails sent to you when someone replys to your share post or if you participate in a conversation in the forum area, you can set it to send you notice if anyone else replies to a discussion your participating in.

Let me know if you need more help navigating the site and I'll try my best to get you the correct info, so you can fully participate in all discussions you want.

I'm really sorry that you've not received the great success with your pain pump that some others have had.  I can imagine that it's a bad disappointment for you and that's a shame.  We all are so different that it's so hard to tell how these things are going to work with us as individuals and fit into our life styles.  They are always coming up with new meds & ideas for all these pain meds and delivery systems, so hopefully you'll find some new ideas here.

I've found that those with the pain pumps are all very helpful and will be happy to answer your questions, so that's a plus.  Wishing you good luck in your search and please feel free to contact me here or you can click on my name and go to my home page to send me a private message with any questions too.

Take Care, hoping the methodone is working to control your pain.

Gentle Hugs

Betty
