trigeminal neuralgia and facial edema

By beachtiglet Friday, November 30, 2007

Well that wasn't too difficult to discover.  According to Algorithmic Diagnosis of Symptoms and Signs by R. Douglas Collins, facial pain is one of the causes of facial edema and one of the most common causes of facial pain is trigeminal neuralgia.  While I don't know that I agree that TN is one of the most common causes of facial pain or that the attacks can last up to 15 minutes in length, my doctors were not alarmed at the facial edema and were treating it symptomatically.  I will inquire about this at the neurologist's appointment in 3 weeks.

There are some interesting pictures here as well if you follow some of the links, but I prefer the pictures on the tna support website as well as some of their information.  It is well worth reading if you are a newbie to all of this like I am.

I saw a neurologist for my daughter for same symptoms accomponied with severe eye pain. He said she was too young for this because she is 14.  Her symptoms occur with exercise which is also uncommon.  Who should i see to confirm or disprove TN? different pediatric neurologist? She cannot walk fast, jog, or participate in sports because it is triggering extreme unilateral swelling, extreme jaw pain and extreme eye pain.
